Black Lives Matter

I made this cake to show our support to the Black Lives Matter Movement.

Black Lives Matter is an international human rights movement, founded July 2013, originating from within the African-American Community, which campaigns against violence and systematic racism towards Black people.

It started in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.

This movement was re-sparked by the death of George Floyd, who was murdered by some members of Minneapolis Police Department, one in particular knelt on George’s neck for 8 Minutes and 46 Seconds, while the other 3 just stood by and watched, all the while George pleaded for his life saying “I can’t breathe” and eventually calling out to his mother, until he drew his last breath.

Sadly this isn’t the first incident like this.

In 2014, a mere year after Black Lives Matter was founded, the deaths of Black Americans killed by police officers already outweighed the number of people killed in the 9/11 attacks.

The organization regularly hold protests speaking against police brutality, police killings of black people and broader issues such as racial profiling and racial inequality.

As members of the Human Race we should all care for one another, this means educating ourselves and our children, with incredibly important facts and historical events that have helped to shape the world we know now, and help us better understand the reason for the Movement and what it stands for

It’s a start, but we feel like there is more we can all do to help, below are ways to show support;

Blacklivesmatter.carrd.co - Here you will find ways you can help the cause by finding petitions to sign, places to donate and so much more.

This was created by Zoe Amira and is filled with art and music by black creators. This video racks up alot of ad revenue, 100% of which is donated between the various organisations.

Check out the official Blklivesmatter instagram page. They post lots of information to keep you informed and have a link in their bio to blacklivesmatter.com which is the central hub of this movement.

I also highly recommend that you check out and follow the #blacklivesmatter on instagram. So many great people are posting their stories, information and so much more which is super important.

I think making this cake could be a great idea if you want to get involved;

This cake would be a great way of showing your support!

You could deliver this to some of the protestors if you live close by or deliver it to some black members of the community that you know or see.

It could also be used to start a conversation, which is important. To educate yourself and other people around you is super important!

Should you want to make this cake, heres a little about how;

First you need to make the cake. This is super easy.

You need to foil the tin before it goes in the oven to stop the cake from burning at the top while the inside cooks.

It is done when you can get a toothpick out the cake clean.

I push the toothpick straight through the foil. If it isn't cooked it means that you can put it back in the oven without exposing it to the air. If it isn't cooked and you keep opening the oven and foil up it could end with the cake sinking in the middle.

While the cake is cooling down you can make your butter icing.

I made a rainbow in the middle of the cake so you need to split your icing into 5 colours for the rainbow, plus the black and white for the outside of the cake.

Remember the center colours don't need as much icing as the outer colours do.

Place all the colours in piping bags and cut a large hole at the bottom.

Pipe the red around the outside of the cake and then follow each colour before the one your piping to create all these circles.

Place the second cake on the top and place it in the fridge for 10 minutes to let the icing set.

You then need to spread a thin layer of black icing around the cake, this is called a crumb coat, to lock the crumbs in place.

Place this in the fridge for 10 minutes to allow the icing to set.

Spread a thicker layer of black icing over the top, make sure you smooth it out.

Place this back in the fridge for 20-25 minutes to let the icing set before you add the white icing.

While that's in the fridge; draw your template.

Joss drew mine for me; He drew around the tin so he could match the size.

Cut the template out and place it on the cake. You can pin it in place with toothpicks if you need to.

Use a thin, circular nozzle on your piping bag. Pipe the white icing around the template.

Take the template off and pipe inside the pattern. Use a palette knife to gently smooth the white out.

Serve and Enjoy!

Black Lives Matter

Ingredients

Cake;

2 ⅔ Cup Self Raising Flour

2 Cup Caster Sugar

2 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda

2 Cup Milk - You can use any plant based milk

3 tsp Vanilla Essence

⅔ Cup Vegetable Oil

1 tbsp Cider Vinegar

Butter Icing;

500g Icing Sugar

220g Butter - You can use any plant based butter

1-2 tsp Vanilla Essence

Food Colouring; Black, Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, Orange

Method

Cake;

Preheat the oven 180C and prepare your 20cm Round Tin

Sift the flour and bicarbonate of soda into a large mixing bowl.

Add the sugar and mix to combine.

Pour in the milk, vanilla, oil and vinegar.

Mix until completely smooth.

Pour your mix into your baking tin.

Cover the tin with foil and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Let cool completely before decorating.

Butter Icing;

Place the butter in a large bowl.

Sift the icing sugar into the bowl.

Add your vanilla essence

Mix everything together to create a completely smooth butter icing.

You now need to separate the butter icing into to 7 bowls.

Place half the mix into 1 bowl and colour it black.

Place quarter of the left over mix into a separate bowl. This will stay white.

Separate the rest of the butter icing and colour for the rainbow in the middle. Remember the middle colour doesn’t need as much icing as the outer colour.

Place all your colours, except black, into piping bags. The white needs a thin circular nozzle, the rest I cut a large hole from the end of the piping bag to create a large circle.

Place in the fridge until needed.

Decorating;

Once the cake has completely cooled you can begin to decorate.

Cut your cake in half to create two layers.

Place your bottom layer of cake on your cake board.

Pipe your rainbow; Pipe your red around the edge of the cake and then follow the other colours around each colour before it.

Place your second layer of cake on top and place in the fridge for 10 minutes to let your icing set.

Spread a thin layer of black icing over the cake, this is called a crumb coat, to lock all the crumbs in place.

Place the cake in the fridge for 10 minutes to let the icing set.

Spread a thicker layer of black icing over the cake. This needs to be thick and smooth.

Place back in the fridge for 20-25 minutes so the icing can set completely before adding the white.

While the cake is in the fridge draw your hand on some paper or card and cut it out. This will be a template.

Place your template on the cake, you can stick it in place with toothpicks if you need to.

Pipe your white around the template.

Take your template off.

Fill in the picture with your white butter icing.

Use a palette knife to gently smooth the picture out as much as possible.

Place in the fridge until ready to serve

Serve

Enjoy!
