I think I have a new favourite recipe! This vegan fried "chicken" tastes amazing, it goes with everything and it's pretty easy to make!
I came accross this recipe a few days ago and I knew I had to try it! The flavours and texture of this "chicken" is just right!
The recipe is pretty easy, it is a little time consuming because you have to soak the chicken for 30 minutes but it's worth the wait!
You will be so glad you made these! I have just bought a new game, called Dobble, so while I waited the 30 minutes Joss and I had a few goes at this game. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves card games; It's a great game for kids and adults.
You can shape this "chicken" however you would like; nuggets, drumsticks ect. This recipe makes between 12-16 pieces, depending on size and shape.
This recipe was inspired by the Six Vegan Sisters recipe for Seitan Fried Chick'n. I changed a few ingredients, but not too much. The original recipe is compared to KFC chicken, and I can see why! From what I remember about KFC from years ago, the spices in this chicken are just like a KFC if not better!

When you have fried your chicken and take it out the oil, I highly recommend placing a cooling rack on a baking tray, and then place the chicken on the rack.
This will allow any excess oil to drip from the chicken, without falling all over the side.

This is what my "chicken" looked like after it has been in the broth for 30 minutes.
I then covered it in flour and milk and fried it, to finish it off and make it the perfect vegan fried "chicken"

I hope you love this as much as I do!

Fried “Chicken” - Makes 12-16 Pieces
Ingredients;
Chicken;
2 Cups Plain Flour
½ Cup Nutritional Yeast
2 tsp Smoked Paprika
2 tsp Garlic Powder
2 tsp Onion Powder
1 tbsp Parsley
1 ½ Cup Vegetable Broth
2 tbsp Soy Sauce - Check out our soy free soy sauce here.
Broth Mix;
4 Cups Vegetable Broth
2 Cups Water
Flour mix;
1 Cups Plain Flour
½ tbsp Smoked Paprika
½ tbsp Onion Powder
½ tbsp Garlic Powder
½ tbsp Paprika - If you like a little heat you can change this to cayenna pepper
¼ tsp Salt
¼ tsp Ground Pepper
Others;
1 Cup Milk
3-4 Cups Vegetable Oil
Method;
Chicken;
Sift the flour into a large bowl.
Add the nutritional yeast and spices. Mix to combine.
Add the vegetable broth and soy sauce.
Knead for 5-7 minutes, until you have a pliable dough. You can add a little extra flour if it’s too sticky
Broth Mix;
Place the broth and water into a large saucepan.
Break little pieces of “chicken” off, shape them and place them in the broth.
Repeat this until all your chicken is in the broth.
Add more water if the broth doesn’t cover the “chicken”, it will grow in size so make sure it is deep enough to still be covering.
Bring the mix to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes.
Flip each piece after 15 minutes.
Getting Ready To Fry;
Mix the flour mix ingredients in a small bowl.
In a separate, small, bowl add the milk.
Place the oil in a large saucepan, you want it to be roughly 1” high.
Heat the oil till roughly 175C
Finishing;
Cover each piece of “chicken” in flour, milk then flour again.
Fry for roughly 3 minutes each side. I did roughly 3-4 pieces at a time
Remove from the oil and place on a cooling rack so any excess oil can drip off.
Serve
Enjoy!
