It was my brothers birthday so of course I had to make him a birthday cake. He is very into gaming so I knew instantly what cake I was going to make him. This vegan games controller cake was the perfect option!
I wanted to make it extra special, so I bought some flavoured icing from sugar and crumbs. I chose the jaffa flavoured, because who doesn't love that!
It smelt amazing! The icing sugar is so fine, it's so lovely to use.
As some of you may know I've used sugar and crumbs flavoured icing sugar quite a bit, I'm very fond of it and I love trying the different flavours.
This one, I think, tastes more like chocolate orange, which I still think tastes amazing. It was roughly half and half in my family who tasted the jaffa but we all loved the butter icing anyway!
This games controller was going to be a ps4 controller but unfortunately I don't have a big enough cake tin, so I couldn't make it as long as a normal ps4 controller. I fit all the important buttons from a ps4 controller and just left out a few of the smaller ones.
I was very happy with how the cake came out! I would like to eventually make a proper ps4 controller, when I have a bigger cake tin, but I am very happy with this cake as a final thing.
My brother was so impressed with his cake, so were the rest of the family, he had a picture on his phone and showed all of his friends! I'm so happy he love it! I love making cakes for my family, I enjoy coming up with great ideas and making and shaping them. Most of all I love watching their faces when they see their cakes and how much they love them.
It makes me so happy when people try my food and love it, it makes all the time and effort I spent on them worth it! And sometimes there are a few difficulties while making cakes and after a little struggle, seeing people enjoy it, makes it worth it!
This cake is a pretty easy one to make, out of all the cakes I've made I think this was the easiest. Although there were still some challenges, it helped to be able to have a controller in front of me to look at.
I also found it really helpful to cut out the shape with some paper and cut around it, this helped me to get the cake shape right. This way there were no mistakes.
This is a great starter cake, if you're looking to get into cake making and decorating, this is a great one to start with.
We served 8 of us with this cake, they were small pieces but the cake is sickly so you don't need big pieces.
I hope you like this cake as much as we did!

Games Controller Cake - Makes 8 small Pieces
Ingredients
Cake;
1 â…“ Cup Self Raising Flour
1 Cup Caster Sugar - I use golden caster sugar but normal will work too
1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda
1 tsp Baking Powder
1 Cup Milk - I use Oat milk but any plant based milk will work
2 tsp Vanilla Essence
â…“ Cup Vegetable Oil
1 tbsp White Vinegar - You can also use apple cider vinegar.
Butter Icing;
500g Jaffa Icing Sugar - https://www.sugarandcrumbs.co.uk/shop/edibles/natural-flavoured-icing-sugar-cocoa-powder.html
220g Butter - I use Flora, it's the one we've found the best for icing. The other butters I've tried melt to fast.
1 tsp Vanilla Essence
Black Fondant - I couldn't say for sure but I think I only used about half a bar.
White Fondant - I used almost a whole bar of white fondant.
Check out my strawberry cake for how to make fondant here, or you can buy fondant at any supermarket.
Sprinkles - I used a selection of sprinkles, big and small, to give a good crunch. You can use any sprinkles you like.
Food colouring for buttons. I used a pink food colouring, it didn't show up as well as I would have liked so I suggest using a lighter colour.
Method
Cake;
* Preheat the oven 180C and prepare your cake tin.
* Sift the flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl.
* Add the sugar.
* Pour in the milk, oil, vinegar and vanilla essence. Mix until smooth.
* Pour your batter into your cake tin and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick can come out clean.
* Let the cake cool completely before decorating.
Icing;
* Place the butter in a large bowl.
* Sift the icing sugar in and mix until smooth.
* Mix in the vanilla essence.
* Place in the fridge until needed.
Decorating;
* Once the cake has completely cooled you can begin to shape it. Cut the cake in half, width ways, so you can have a layer of butter icing in the middle.
* Draw an outline of a controller on paper and cut it out. Place on your cake and cut around it. I stuck it on with toothpicks to help keep it in place.
It helps to have an actual controller infront of you while you are decorating your cake, you can also look at my picture to see what I did.
* Spread a thin layer of butter icing on the bottom layer of cake. The thickness of this is really up to you, it's quite a sickly butter icing so I wouldn't make it too thick.
* Add the sprinkles on top of the butter icing, then place the next layer of cake on top. The amount of sprinkles are up to you, I covered the whole of the butter icing with sprinkles so there was a crunch with every bite.
* Place in the fridge for roughly 30 minutes. This lets the butter icing set a bit so the cake wont slide around while you are doing the next part.
* Spread a thicker layer around the cake top and sides of the cake. Make sure it’s smooth and then place in the fridge while you make the fondant pieces.
* Roll out the black fondant and cut out the pieces for the controller, see picture. It helps to have an actual controller in front of you to look at while your doing this, but you can look at my picture to see what I did too.
* Roll out the white fondant to as thick as you prefer, I went for roughly ½ cm.
* Take your cake back out the fridge, place the white fondant over and cake and gently smooth around the edges and cut off the excess fondant.
* Put the black fondant pieces you prepared previously onto your cake. If they wont stick on as they are you can add a little water to use like glue.
* Draw on the button shapes with your food colouring. This is the triangle ect.
* Place in the fridge for 30 minutes or until ready to serve.
Serve
Enjoy!
