Vegan Onion Rings

These vegan onion rings are the perfect side dish! They go great with a burger, pizza and so much more!

For these I doubled breadcrumbed them, I think breadcrumbs on onion rings go perefectly!

If you don't breadcrumb onion rings you need to replace the breadcrumbs with plain flour. This still works but I don't think they are as good.

These are super crispy and incredibely tasty!

This recipe makes 12-15 onion rings using a small onion. If you have a large onion, for large rings, it will make less.

This recipe is so easy to make! The longest part about making this is putting them in the freezer.

I put them in the freezer to help them hold together, if you don't put them in the freezer the batter falls off when you fry them so you end up with plain fried onions.

These onion rings go great with a dip! Check out our sauces page to find the perfect dip!

As you can see I used 2 rings per onion ring. I did this to make them thicker. This is completley optional and you can do it however you would prefer.

To make these onion rings you need to cut your onion into 1/2cm thick slices and spereate the rings, like above.

Make the batter;

Add the flour to a small bowl.

Add the milk a little at a time, stirring before adding more, until you have a thick batter.

Seperate this into 2 small bowls. This is so when you dunk your onion rings the second time, if any breadcrumbs come off in the mix it doesn't get in your first batter.

Place your breadcrumbs into another small bowl.

Dunk your onion rings into one of the batters, then the breadcrumbs, the second batter and then the breadcrumbs again.

Place them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes.

Heat the oil up until you when you splash some water in it you can hear the sizzle.

Turn the heat down to a med-low to stop the oil at a consistant heat and stop it from burning the onion rings.

I hope you love these as much as we do!

Marisa

Onion Rings - Makes 12-15

Ingredients

½ Onion - Sliced 1/2cm Thick and rings separated

½-1 Cup Breadcrumbs

Batter;

½ Cup Plain Flour

¼ Cup Milk

Salt & Pepper To Taste

Oil to Fry

Method

Prepare a tray or plate that can go in the freezer

Place the flour in a small bowl

Slowly add the milk and mix before adding more, until the mix is a thick batter.

Add the salt and pepper and taste to make sure you don’t want more.

Split this mix so half is in another small bowl - This is so in the breadcrumbs don't get into the first batter.

Add the breadcrumbs into a separate small bowl.

Dunk your onions into the batter, then into the breadcrumbs, into the second lot of batter and again into the breadcrumbs. Make sure you coat them well each time.

Place them in the freezer for 10-20 minutes. If you fry the onion rings when they haven't been put in the freezer the batter comes off and you end up with just fried onion.

Heat your oil until you can splash a little water in, it sizzles. Turn the heat down to med-low. This keeps the oil at a consistant heat and stops the onion rings from burning.

Fry your onions for 2-3 minutes each side or until golden brown

Serve

Enjoy!
