Vegan Yum Yums

After many requests, I finally decided to make Vegan Yum Yums. This recipe makes about 8-10.

I honestly can’t remember having ever tried a yum yum before, so my first taste was of my own homemade ones. I can see what all the fuss is about! They were soft and gloriously sugary, very similar to a classic donut recipe.

The shape was a little difficult to get, and I definitely have some room for improvement. But, it's more about the taste anyway, right?

I scoured the internet for recipes and just a general idea of how to make these, and what they were supposed to look like. It appears that it is pretty common to either cook your yum yums in the oven or in oil in a pan. I went with the frying route for this one.

Using the excess oil from frying will help to get the delicious icing. I sifted the icing sugar over both sides of the yum yums which proved a good technique for a nice thin, tasty layer of icing.

It can be tricky getting the right oil temperature for these. As they are quite thick they will need a little longer to cook, if the oil is too hot it will burn the outside before cooking all the way through. Make sure the oil is on a lower heat, but of course it still needs to cook so not too low.

If you are unsure whether the oil is hot enough, put a small bit of dough into the oil. If it starts bubbling around it and it floats to the top then it's hot enough. If it does not start cooking immediately the oil is not yet hot enough.

Why not try these with a melted chocolate dip! How amazing would that taste?

Yum Yums - Makes 8-10

Ingredients:

¼ Cup Butter

½ Cup Milk

2 tbsp Oil

2 Cups Plain Flour

¼ Cup Caster Sugar

1 tsp Baking Powder

¼ Cup Icing Sugar

Method

Melt butter over medium heat.

Add milk and oil until well combined.

Take off heat and set aside.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder and sugar.

Mix the wet ingredients with the dry.

Combine to make a thick dough.

Roll out dough into a thick rectangle. About 9cm tall.

Use a knife to cut the dough into smaller rectangles, about 9cm long and 4cm wide.

In each rectangle cut a line in the centre lengthways.

Leave about 2 cm either side.

Twist each piece round once.

In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat.

When it is at temperature, lay the yum yums into the oil.

Fry on either side for about 2 - 3 minutes.

Lay yum yums on a plate and sift icing sugar over them on both sides.

Serve

Enjoy!
