Hot Cross Buns

This Vegan Hot Cross Buns recipe is perfect for Springtime! Who doesn’t love a hot cross bun when the weather starts to warm up and the sun comes out? This is one of my favourite things to have for breakfast.

This recipe makes 12 delicious and soft hot cross buns and takes about 2 hours to make in total. If kept covered they will stay good for around 4-5 days. Toast them and spread a layer of delicious butter over each side for an extra sweet flavour.

Why not check out our butter & cheese or spreads & chutney page to find the perfect thing to spread on these.

I used mixed dried fruit as that’s what I had already, but if you prefer sultanas this will taste just as good. You could even add a tsp or 2 of cinnamon for extra delicious flavour.

These hot cross buns make a great breakfast or snack and are a wonderful recipe to make for the family to enjoy on Easter!

I hope you love these as much as we do!

Hot Cross Buns - Makes 12

Ingredients

300ml Vegan Milk - I use oat milk but any plant based milk will work

50g Butter - I use flora but any plant based butter will work.

500g Plain Flour

1 Sachet Yeast

70g Caster Sugar

70 Mixed Dried Fruit - You can use just sultanas or raisins if you prefer.

For the cross

70g Plain Flour

7-10 tbsp water

Method

Warm the milk on medium heat.

Take off the heat and add the butter. Stir until melted.

Mix the flour, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl.

Stir in the milk and butter until dough forms. It may be a little sticky at this point.

Leave the dough to rise somewhere warm in an oiled bowl for 1 hour.

When risen, knead the dried fruit into the dough.

Cut the dough into 12 pieces and roll each piece in your hand to form a ball. Put flour on your hands to stop it from sticking.

Place each ball onto a lined baking tray at least 2 cm away from each other.

Cover and leave to rise for another 45 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 220c.

Make the cross by mixing the flour with one tbsp of water at a time until it forms a pipeable dough.

When the buns have risen, pipe a cross on top of each one.

Bake for 15-20 minutes.

Serve

Enjoy!
